Cedula, 1595 Nov. 19, El Pardo [España, a la] Casa de la Contratación, Seville : 1596 / yo El Rey.

Informs the Casa, a royally-licensed monopoly controlling trade and navigation between Spain and America, of the King's license to Fray Jusepe [i.e José] de Jesús María, of Discalced Carmelites to go to the provinces of New Mexico in New Spain, and to take 15 friars of the Order with him. The Casa's Treasurer is directed to pay the friars' passage from Seville to Vera Cruz, and from there into Mexico, and to provide them with supplies. The Carmelites never reached New Mexico. They were kept in Mexico, but were allowed to send friars with Vizcaino's voyage of exploration to California in 1602.
